MIKE ALLINA
PRESIDENT, BC SCHOOL SPORTS
Welcome athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, and parents to a new year of school sports. Your dedication and commitment to school sports is an integral element of quality educational programs. School sports play a significant role in establishing positive school cultures and healthy learning environments. Therefore, your involvement in school sports is extremely valuable to our student athletes, schools and communities.
We celebrated all our BCSS championships in great style with a very high standard of athletic prowess in all of our 19 sports in 2018- 2019. Congratulations and thanks to all our student-athletes, teachers, administrators, coaches and officials for a job well done. You are an inspiration to us all. Lets continue to work together to ensure equal success for this 2019-2020 school year.
Last year BCSS staff and many BCSS members continued their work with respect to the New Zones because they come into effect for the school year 2019-2020. Districts and Associations have been busy creating committees that will oversee the new zones and ensure that the paths to BCSS Provincial Championships are clear, fair and follow the guidelines contained in our constitution. It all looks to be in place and that is a testament to all the people who were involved to ensure this happened.
As I enter my last year as President of BCSS I hope to continue the momentum we have created with our Strategic Plan that will continue to give BCSS direction for the next three to four years. Two very strong committees, competitive fairness and governance, have been formed and are presently hard at work. We are grateful for the members who have volunteered to be part of the much needed change in the way way BCSS is structured. They have a very important task of directing BCSS in a positive direction with respect to governance and creating a level playing field for all our members. It is important that we all understand that change is inevitable as hard as it might be. Education and school sports has changed a great deal since the late 60’s but our ways of governing has developed at a much slower rate and thus we need to develop changes so that BCSS becomes more inclusive and efficient in how it conducts its business and provides clearer leadership.
BCSS will continue to work with transparency, purpose and collaboration in promoting the value of school sports. I would like to acknowledge and thank the BCSS Board of Directors, committee members, eligibility officers and office staff for their leadership, dedication, commitment and positive energy. On behalf of the BC School Sports Board of Directors, I wish all of you continued success in the 2019-2020 school year.

Congratulations on qualifying for the BC School Sports Provincial Championship! Qualifying itself, is a wonderful accomplishment, and is an experience that few student-athletes get have! With over 450 member schools, and over 70,000 student-athletes, you have earned the privilege to represent your community and your school and compete for a provincial title.
I want to recognize the coaches, both teachers and community volunteers, for the time they give to support the student-athletes in their pursuit of success. BC School Sports has over 6800 coaches around the province that give up countless hours to make school sport a reality. They are servant-leaders and they are the foundation for which school sport exists. On behalf of our Board of Directors and our member schools, I sincerely thank all our coaches for the work they do. Student-athletes, do not let this weekend pass by without thanking your coaches for all they have given to you and your team.
A giant thank you to those who make this championship possible. The Local Organizing Committee, the BCSS Sport Commission, the sponsors and event volunteers. So much goes into hosting a BCSS Provincial Championship and without their efforts, none of this would happen. Be sure to thank a volunteer this weekend for all they do.
BC School Sports believes interscholastic athletics are an extension of the classroom. The lessons learned through sport, provide the foundation for good leaders of the future. School sport fosters sportsmanship, builds character and establishes healthy active living habits that will last long into adulthood.
Athletes, I sincerely wish you the very best throughout the championship. Remember to represent yourself, your school and community well and display sportsmanship for your opponent and officials. I hope this championship provides to each you amazing athletic feats, fierce but respectful competition, and memories to last a lifetime.
